Children’s Hospital’s patients are students, too, which is why UPMC offers school-age kids
the opportunity to keep up with classwork during extended hospital stays.
When they feel strong enough, patients can even “go to school” to the cheerful sixth-floor
classroom, where a certified teacher provides tutoring after coordinating lessons with the child’s school.
The Hospital School Program, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Public Schools, is one of dozens of programs
and activities offered by Children’s Child Life
Department to give young patients a sense of normalcy. Whether it’s at the bedside, in a medical-free
playroom (no white coats allowed) or on the way to the operating room, the Child Life staff is there to provide
kids educational, social and emotional support.
