SHADY Advice

Save his eyes from permanent damage — with sunglasses, says Richard W. Hertle, MD, chief of Children’s Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology. Just one day in the sun without protection can burn the cornea — the clear, outermost layer of the eye. Over the years, cumulative sun exposure can result in cataracts, which can lead to blindness. Look for plastic lenses that provide 100 percent UV (ultraviolet) protection. As for the frame, encourage your child to choose brightly colored frames. There’s no reason safety can’t be fun.
