Rules of the Road

FACT: Seat belts double your chances of walking away from a crash without a serious injury.

For these reasons and more, parents should establish rules of the road for their teenage drivers, says Barbara A. Gaines, MD, director of Children’s Benedum Pediatric Trauma Program:

  • No cell phone use while driving.
  • Only one friend allowed.
  • No nighttime driving without an adult.
  • Always wear a seat belt and obey the speed limit.

Give them an “unvarnished dose of the potentially life-altering impact of their careless driving” with the Reality Education for Drivers (RED) program.
