Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC’s Physician Alumni Association hosted Alumni Day (and Night) in April for pediatricians, specialists, surgeons and researchers who trained or worked at Children’s Hospital.
Phipps Conservatory was the setting for the evening gathering where more than 200 alumni, residents and current medical staff enjoyed great food and company. The next morning, alumni and medical staff gathered for presentations by distinguished current and former faculty members, among them transplant pioneer Thomas E. Starzl, MD, PhD.
Awards and Presentations
The 2008 Howard A. Mermelstein, MD, Award for Excellence in Pediatrics was presented to Harold “Chick” Glick, MD, of Children’s Community Pediatrics–GIL. The Mermelstein Memorial Lecture, “Pediatricians of the Future: Residency Redesign,” was delivered by J. Carlton Gartner Jr., MD.
Andrew H. Urbach, MD, Children’s medical director for clinical excellence and service, received the inaugural Eugene S. Wiener, MD, Award for Outstanding Contributions to Pediatric Health Care, established in remembrance of Dr. Wiener, who was medical director of Children’s Hospital at the time of his death in 2006. The award was created with the support of patient families, staff and colleagues, as well as Dr. Wiener’s sons, Jeff and Justin. Dr. Starzl delivered the Wiener Memorial Lecture, “Reflections on Transplantation: Past, Present & Future.”
